What is hypothyroidism?
It is a syndrome resulting from the deficiency of thyroid hormone production. It is estimated that 3 to 5% of the population has some form of hypothyroidism. It is more common in women and the incidence increases with age.
If left untreated, hypothyroidism causes in children, severe growth retardation and mental retardation. In adulthood, leading to widespread depression in bodily functions.
There is no prevention, unless neonatal screening with the heel prick test for congenital hypothyroidism. But no simple tests for the diagnosis and treatment with synthetic thyroid hormone is safe and effective once the proper dosage is established.
Diet for Hypothyroidism
This endocrine gland is responsible for production of hormones,
such as triiodothyronine or T3 and thyroxine or T4. The ups and downs
that hormones cause the two main thyroid disease, hypothyroidism and
hyperthyroidism.
